Enjoyed our events and content last term? Want to get involved in sustainability in Oxford and make new friends? After one of our biggest years yet, we're really excited for what the future will hold for Oxford Climate Society - and we'd love for you to join the team.
Available positions range from events planning, to education and outreach. For those worried about time commitment of committee positions - all Director roles (Action, Media, Events, Education and Arts) also have an equivalent Deputy Director position which is open for application, which will work in the same area but is lower time commitment. |
We're delighted to announce that applications for the following roles on our Committee are now live!
Oxford Climate Society is the UK's largest student society dedicated to exploring multidisciplinary perspectives on climate change. We host a wide range of speaker events throughout term time, run various action campaigns within the university, and deliver the Oxford School of Climate Change, an award winning seminar series delivered by climate academics. Our past speakers this year include Sir Patrick Vallance, Noam Chomsky and Mary Robinson. Applications are welcome from any degree course (undergraduate & postgraduate) with an interest in climate. We can't wait to hear from you! |

In the past, this has meant working closely with both students and staff to work toward Decarbonising Oxford Colleges by campaigning for more ambitious carbon and biodiversity targets and action plans, as well as running information workshops for staff and students. This largely involves:
- Managing the OCS Action Team with whom you can organise events and workshops and plan the Decarbonise Oxford Campaign.
- Overseeing the Decarbonise Oxford Campaign. Colleges, as autonomous bodies, are not bound to the sustainability targets set out in the university strategy. The Decarbonise Oxford project is aimed at supporting students in and across colleges to take action and push colleges towards taking concrete steps to decarbonisation. This involves:
- Working closely with the Oxford Climate Justice Campaign and the VP Charities & Community at the SU to organise workshops for E&E reps.
- Organising and chairing meetings.
- Understanding the new needs that may come up and how to fulfil them.
- In the past, this role has also involved organising College workshops, a series of workshops for bursars, students, and other staff that provide information and resources to implement concrete sustainable changes in colleges. Examples include:
- Carbon auditing
- Writing carbon targets
- Sustainable food
- Sustainable Buildings
Together, the responsibilities of this role call for someone who is able to:
- Think creatively about campaign strategy.
- Manage contacting and networking with staff and students across the University about campaign issues.
- Take over administrative work of running meetings within the team and organising larger workshops and events for bigger groups.

Education Director
This role is focused on organizing OCS’s educational activities. Since 2018, OCS has run a highly successful programme called the School of Climate Change (SoCC), which connects Oxford climate experts with students and other interested people for a ‘Climate 101’ crash course on the basics of climate science, politics, and action.
Before Covid, this was delivered to a hand-selected group of 30 Oxford students followed by a College dinner once a week; during Covid, we switched online and opened up the SoCC to anybody worldwide for a 1.5hr Zoom webinar. We have enrolled around 1400 people each term from >100 countries, including a very large number from the Global South. Our reach as a society through this role has been epic and offers a unique window for climate action for someone already well-versed in climate science. Post-Covid, the new Education Director will need to decide how to take the SoCC forward: one option might be to shift from a live online webinar to a curated MOOC anybody in the world can watch on-demand. Other responsibilities for Education Director can include developing the ‘Climate on the Curriculum/Sustainability on the Syllabus’ campaign, or any other collabs you have the time to work on.
Time commitment: around 6 hours per week during a SoCC term, which are Michaelmas and Hilary [This consists of about 2 hours presenting a week, plus many emails; and organization ahead of the lecture series].

- Organized; willing to lead a small team; and confident liaising with senior Oxford academics via email
- Confident public speaking and chairing a Zoom webinar
- Ideas about how to take climate education for the society forward in a period of increasing Zoom fatigue amongst lecturers
