We're delighted to announce that applications for the following roles are now live!!
We can't wait to hear from you, and welcome you to our teams! |
Our Available Roles:
EVENTS TEAM
Our weekly events give you a great opportunity to shape the discussion around climate at Oxford and beyond, as well as the chance to meet some fascinating speakers. You would be involved in designing OCS' termly event programme by choosing important topics, planning and delivering the events themselves, as well as the many collaborations we get involved in. If you think you’d suit the work that goes into event-planning (which can often be unpredictable!) then please do apply!
The application window for these roles closes at the end of Tuesday 5th week (12th November), and we'll get back to you as quickly as we can after that.

ALUMNI NETWORK AND ENGAGEMENT TEAM
NEW! We're looking for people to develop and manage an Oxford University alumnus network. You'll be building the network initially from OCS alumni and friends, and collaborating with other environmental groups at Oxford. Many current OCS/Oxford alum have approached us requesting we engage more with them and provide opportunities for them to give back and help lift current students into impactful positions after they graduate. The aims of the network include:

- Providing opportunities for OCS' alum to share their knowledge in careers events (which you would work with the Skills & Education Team on)
- Developing a campaign to redirect university donations towards pro-climate goals, and further use this to provide leverage for change (which you would work with the Campaigns team on)
- In the long term to build a platform and system for alum to mentor current students. The post-university environmental space can be complex and challenging to navigate for students, and we are hoping to provide OCS passionate and engaged members with step up on the ladder
- To communicate relevant work of OCS (eg events, round-tables, policy workshops, etc) to platforms such as LinkedIn to promote the profile of OCS' and its members' work on climate solutions

SKILLS AND EDUCATION TEAM
School of Climate Change
The School of Climate Change is now in its 4th edition during Michealmas 2019. The School's aim is to provide a diverse group of 30-40 participants a comprehensive education on climate change and its extensive impacts and solutions, especially for students that do not have the various aspects of climate change covered in their curriculum. Every edition of the School is usually oversubscribed by a factor of at least two and, despite nearly trebling the cohort size last year, we currently still can't provide this education to as many students as we would like to, and who are keen to learn with us.
And this is where we need you! We would like to expand the School to make it accessible for more students in Oxford or maybe even around the world. We have interest from Oxford University's VC of Academic Affairs in supporting an up-scaling, and are in contact with the Student Union and also the Smith School. We have pulled together ideas around doubling/quadrupling the amount of participants again, digital options and large lecture style courses. The feasibility of these ideas would need to be further investigated and then executed. This really is a great opportunity to have impacts by contributing to the development of environmental education at Oxford University, and to be a part of pushing a course that already has more participants per year than most undergraduate courses!
This project is part of the Education & Skills Team of the Oxford Climate Society (Kate Guy, Pek Shibao and Milan Kloewer) and now with collaboration from the SU (Kaya Axelsson, VP Charities and Communities @ SU) and the Smith School for Enterprise and the Environment (Andrew McCarthy, Executive Education Manager).

Environmental Careers Programme
The Oxford Climate Society has a focus on educating students around the various aspects of climate change, which we need to understand the climate crisis and its global scale. In order to turn this climate education into action, which is desperately needed in all parts of society and professional careers, we want to run workshops and events that equip the graduates from Oxford with important skills and knowledge before they enter the next stage of their career.
This is where we need you, and your enthusiasm & energy to help create such a careers programme! You will help further develop the ideas and strategy that we have for the programme (that could be held in a condensed form over a weekend or on a weekly basis running throughout several weeks or term), and work with us in delivering the workshops and events. We will need to identify the exact skills that we want to cover, finding experts for each of those and the broader workshop format, including team building and the social events so that the participants not just learn from the experts but also from each other. We are also already exploring avenues for outreach to school students to help empower and inspire them towards environmental careers, or relevant degrees at top universities.
This project is part of the Education & Skills Team of the Oxford Climate Society (Kate Guy, Pek Shibao and Milan Kloewer), we currently have support and collaboration with several organisations around Oxford (including the ECI, LIGC, and SBS), links and contacts to high-profile people and companies, and there is a lot of space for your ideas and contributions!
The application window for these roles closes at the end of Tuesday 5th week (12th November), and we'll get back to you as quickly as we can after that.
CAMPAIGNS TEAM
Climate on the Curricula
1) Developing Climate Curricula in Departments
We are currently recruiting people to work on this throughout the year with the SU! You will be coordinating efforts and creating strategies for increasing coverage and integration of climate change in curricula across the university degree courses. You will get the opportunity to meet key university staff who control Oxford's education, and work on the media aspects of running a successful academic advocacy campaign.

2) Creating Alternate Reading Lists
We are also looking for people (perhaps who have only a little time to give) from all subjects to compile reading lists for their own subjects. We hope to create the "ultimate" list of resources for keen students to widen their knowledge and increase expertise. Such resources could be generally related to your subject, or provide readings that can augment an existing module (eg. resources about climate change and global conflict, so that you can slot that into a PPE essay about conflict).
We are happy to accept everyone would like to contribute to this, and we would welcome you joining us 24/7/365! To apply email us directly!
Climate Action Plan
Do you want to make a tangible difference to improving Oxford colleges' climate policies? OCS is looking for committed individuals to join the Campaigns Team. This year we are running a series of workshops for both students and faculty to implement concrete sustainability changes in colleges (workshops about carbon targets, sustainability plans, energy reduction, and sustainable food among other things). We are looking for 2-3 people to join our team, who can think creatively about how these workshops should be run, as well as helping with the administrative work of inviting speakers and organising the details of these workshops.
If you are interested in this role, please send an email to our campaigns coordinator Ellie Holton at eleanor.holton@new.ox.ac.uk with the following information about yourself:
Name
College/affiliation
Why would you be good for this role?
What relevant experience do you have (e.g. experience in climate action or events organisation)?
Are you able to commit to weekly or bi-weekly meetings to plan the workshops?
The application window for these roles close Sunday, 1st December. We look forward to hearing your responses!

MEDIA AND RESEARCH TEAM
The science on climate change is clear, but not enough people are listening. Making the conversation about climate change louder is therefore vital for action to be taken. As part of one of the leading educational institutions in the world we are in a position to make a difference to this conversation. 2019 has been an exciting year for climate activism with 'Greta' and 'Extinction Rebellion' on everyone's lips. It is crucial that momentum continues to build and YOU can help achieve this by applying to write for the OCS blog! Through the OCS blog we aim to inform and inspire people to act by bringing summaries and analysis of the latest developments in climate policy and science so that the climate crisis is recognised.
This year blog posts will be split into 3 sections and we want 3 people to write for each. We also welcome individual blog posts when inspiration hits you! You don't have to study any particular degree, just be enthusiastic about climate action. Those chosen to fill the 9 roles will meet with the Publicity and Publications coordinator once a fortnight to discuss ideas and plan for upcoming blog posts making it a good way to meet others equally passionate about the environment from across a range of degrees.
1) Event summaries
Attending 2 OCS events per term and writing up a summary and for those unable to attend.
This is a great way of making discussions and talks by expert speakers accessible to those unable to attend. These summaries allow us to extend our reach to the many subscribers not local to Oxford who are enthusiastic about the work of OCS. See example post here: women and climate change
2) "What you need to know about...X..."
Most people have a blurry understanding of climate change keywords, concepts and developments but aren't informed enough to use them to make a compelling case for climate action. For example many have heard about carbon capture and storage but are unsure of how it works or its implications for climate change. We therefore want to clarify these words and concepts so that people who care about the environment have the confidence to use them to argue for climate action!
3) Reports and analysis of climate change in the news
This section of the blog will provide updates on the latest climate change related news. This is key to maintaining a global awareness of climate change which is already having devastating effects in other parts of the world. We would also encourage you to use this as an opportunity to voice personal reflections on the developments you share in the post. See here for a possible style of post: when Manchester traffic lights turned green, coming unstuck.
If you want to apply to any of the three positions then send an email to oxfordclimatesociety@gmail.com with:
If you want to submit a one off blog post then send an email to the same address.
